Inspirational RVing Movie:
Not being fully awake nor comprehending the obvious magnitude of my pronouncement, his groggy reply was, “Yes, dear – if you say so, I’m happy for you.” His lack of enthusiasm notwithstanding, I wasn’t deterred, “No, seriously – there’s a name for us and a bunch of other people out there doing what we are doing and now we can meet them all!”
THIS woke him up fast because he thought I meant they were all stopping by for lunch!
So as I let him wake up a little and I explained a bit more slowly that I had just discovered several full-time RVing Facebook groups, and the reality for our own family sunk in that we weren’t alone on the road – just that our path getting here was a little different than most…
Our desire to get a motorhome and travel the U.S. stemmed from our existing online Internet Marketing business that allowed us to work from anywhere and kept us traveling 9 out of 12 months in the year prior to us officially becoming full-time RVers in 2008.
As a motivational speaker, marketing consultant and coach, we had already been traveling for years throughout the U.S. teaching people to make money online – speaking at events, doing workshops and training clients on-site to setup their own online businesses and become financially free.
But hotels were starting to take their toll and because Greg had traveled internationally for over 20 years in his prior occupation, his distaste of airports made ‘flying the friendly skies’ anything but a pleasant family experience.
So we concluded that a motorhome would be the perfect solution – a cozy place to call home as we continued to do what we loved and an opportunity to slow down the pace and actually enjoy all the cities we were visiting on business – as well as incorporate hands on education into the homeschooling we were already doing with our two daughters.
As an added benefit, the notion of living the RVing lifestyle in effect was largely us practicing what we preached. After all, who better to train you to become financially free than the “Mulac Family Marketers,” who were already living the dream?
And with our daughters having their own online motivational childen’s products & blogs, running high profile events attracting 100s of promoters, and making their own money online – it was further evidence that the Internet dream was attainable by anyone – regardless of age or experience.
With a great deal of excitement, we purchased our first motorhome in early 2008 on one of our business trips, returned to our house in Pennsylvania, packed up what we thought we’d need for a few weeks (including our two cats) and headed out on our inaugural RV trip from the east coast to California for a 5 day coaching intensive with two clients.
We asked Greg’s sister to watch the house for a few weeks and since she lived 2 doors down, that seemed to be a pretty reasonable request. At least until a “few weeks” turned into TWO YEARS!
We literally left the house as if we were simply heading out to dinner – no downsizing, no packing, purging or preparing. After all, we were coming back in a few weeks… or so we thought!
In those first two years, we didn’t really call ourselves full-time RVers as much as we would simply laugh and tell people we were on an extended vacation. In some ways, having a house and a mortgage that we paid every month, didn’t really feel like our RV lifestyle was permanent. It was an option, and at any time we could exercise that option and return to the sticks and bricks – it’s just that we didn’t feel like it for two years straight.
Despite having our house winterized (the water company confirmed that the water was shut off and lines were drained) a pipe froze and burst! And by the time my sister-in-law discovered it three days later, 100 gallons per hour had been gushing throughout our three-story home.
Yes – the water company screwed up and ended up being totally liable for never shutting off the water as they said they did!
The house and all our worldly possessions (not with us already in the motorhome) were destroyed and we were 3000 miles away with some profound decisions to make.
It wasn’t until that very moment that our family had realized that we had long since detached ourselves from our material possessions, mentally downsized already and had informally adopted a full-time RVing lifestyle for years. We simply hadn’t put a label on it yet.
And when faced with the option to rebuild, buy new or continue on down the road – our family meeting resulted in a resounding “STAY ON THE ROAD!” from all four of us.
Ironically, it wasn’t more than a few months after the flood that we started meeting up with other full-time RVers on the road and realized that we were indeed a full-timers on the road with many others just like us out there!
Today, as we resonate with all the other full-time RVers we’ve been meeting in person and getting to know online – our marketing expertise has come full circle.
While we still maintain our stature and multiple streams of income in online marketing circles, we have chosen instead to refocus our efforts these days on helping our fellow fulltime RVers establish profitable online businesses as well as building this very site – FTRVing.com – dedicated to full-time RVers from all walks of life.
